The Advocate: Patin closes BREC season with win in Players Championship win, BREC top honor
The final round at the BREC Players Championship turned into a day of redemption for Blaine Patin, who has been in the title hunt for every BREC tournament he entered this year.
Coming in on the heels of four consecutive second-place finishes, Patin finally closed the deal with a final-round 71. The score gave him a 36-hole total of 6-under par at Beaver Creek Golf Course in Zachary.
The title also added to Patin’s winning total as BREC Player of the Year. The Players Championship was the final tournament in a year long contest that awarded points to golfers for high finishes.
Phil Schmitt began the day two strokes behind Patin, but shot an even-par 72 to finish second at 3-under. Schmitt caught Patin on the back nine, and the two were tied at 5-under through 14 holes.
Patin made birdie at 15 while Schmitt took bogey, and Patin closed with three pars to seal the win. It was Patin’s second victory this year along with the City Park Championship.
“This is one of the best years I’ve had, but its been a little empty because of all the seconds,” Patin said. “Its been great to finish second, but we do play these things to win. It’s very satisfying to finish with a win.”
Baton Rouge Amateur champion Scott Haynie shot 72 to finish third at 1-over. Todd Elkins carded a 74 and placed fourth at 4-over, and Dumas Memorial winner Dante Caldera was fifth at 6-over following a 74.
Playing in a threesome along with Lee Stirling, Patin and Schmitt had up-and-down rounds that required rules clarifications from course manager Haze Brignac on each side.
At the par 5 sixth, Patin’s drive imbedded in the turf above the left fairway sand trap. He took an unplayable lie, but subsequent drops rolled back into the bunker.
Patin eventually played two balls to finish the hole, one from the trap, and another from a placed lie in the rough above the bunker. He made double bogey from the trap, but saved par with his second ball, a score that was ruled valid because he was allowed to place the ball after his drop rolled into a hazard.
At the par-5 13th, Schmitt noticed his ball move after he had addressed a five-foot birdie putt. He marked his ball again and sank the putt unsure if he would be assessed a one-stroke penalty.
Patin opened his round with with birdies at 1 and 2, and had a four-stroke lead through three holes. The lead grew to five on the fourth, where Schmitt got into trouble with an errant tee shot.
After Patin three-putted for bogey at five, Schmitt got another shot back on the sixth. He hit the green in two, and two-putted from 20 feet for birdie.
“I drove the ball so bad today, but the couple of times I did get in the fairway was on the par fives,” Schmitt said. “I lipped out a few putts, and it just didn’t go my way.
“I hit the ball poorly, but I also didn’t catch any good breaks.”
One such instance was on the seventh when Schmitt pulled his drive left of the fairway. The ball hit a tree and was out of bounds by a foot when it came to rest.
Schmitt went on to make a 20-footer to save bogey on the hole.
Patin held a one-shot lead through 14, but another three-putt dropped him into a tie at 5-under with Schmitt.
At the par-3 15th, Patin’s tee shot was 20 feet below the hole, and Schmitt was 25 feet left in the fringe. Schmitt chipped six feet past the cup while Patin drained his putt. Schmitt missed his par putt to drop two strokes back.
“I’m pleased to not only close with player of the year, but to finish with a win,” Patin said.Player of the Year Standings after Amateur
